Unit 1- Chosen topic.

|
The topic I chose for my final piece is Fragments. I chose fragments because I think theres a very wide variety of subjects to be able to experiment with and, to me is a topic I'm most interested in out of our other options.
The idea of rearranging and image and being able to experiment with it I think will be really interesting. So far I like the idea of nature and plants being fragmented as I think the the small details and different patterns will be great to experiment with. On this page I am going to be researching artists who have used fragmentation in the there work which will hopefully give me ideas of what to do for my final piece, and also produce different images and ideas to go towards this. |
Pinterest- Fragments
I have made a Pinterest account and created a board where I have added images that I find interesting and that are related to fragments . I am going to continue adding images to this account and get ideas for my final piece . To visit my Pinterest click on the image on the below.
Reynald Drouhin.
I found these fragmented geographic images by Reynald Drouhin. I really like the style of these pictures, and the way they have taken images of landscapes and cut out a section of the same image and then rotated in the centre. I like the minimalist, clean style of these images and hope to make some of my own interpretations.
First set of images
For my first set of images I was experimenting with negative space and plants. Using these I want to experiment with the style of Reyald Drouhin. I took these in black & white because It increased tho contrast and different shades of the plants against the sky. I used a cannon to take these images and used creative auto in monochrome to make these images black and white.
Photoshop
I Wanted to try the same style as Reyald Drouhin and this is the process I plan to use in photoshop:
1. First I Opened photo shop, selected file and scrolled down to open, I then inserted my chosen image. I chose an image of a tree as I thought the detail of the leaves would be interesting with this chosen style. 2. I then selected the elliptical marquee tool and, whilst holding down shift, placed my circle on the area I wanted to rotate, which for me was the centre of the image. |
4. Next, I wanted to rotate the cropped out circle. To do this, hover over edit, and scroll down until you reach transform, here it will allow you to rotate your image, `I chose to rotate it by 180*. 5. After Rotating the cropped circle this was my finished product. I like the effect of the black and white and I think the circle was a good choice of shape for this particular image. Also the detail of the leaves, I think, is very effective. |
Here are some more images I made in photoshop using the same style:
My Favourites:
This was the first image I made in the style of Reyald Drouhin and I think it was very effective. the The small details of the leaves against the plain whet background allow them to stand out more and I think the monochrome effect worked well in this image. I think the simple shape of the circle was very effective as it was already quite busy.
This is one of my favourite images I made in the style of Reyald Drouhin. In most of his images he only cuts and rotates one section of his image but I wanted to experiment and repeated it three time instead of once. I like the effect of overlapping them and how I edited the original image to darken it which makes them stand out more against the light and plain background. Also I used triangles as I think they are a more interesting shape to overlap.
Experimenting with triangles:
I really like the effect of using the triangles in this style on previous images and wanted to try it on others. I also liked repeating them and then overlapping them as I think it makes an amazing pattern.
I also used photoshop to make these, and used some newly taken images but others where from past projects or homework's.

After making these images I think that triangles worked very well with this style and landscape images with a clear line going through the centre of the image like Reyald Drouhin came out better when rotating the cropped shape. I also thought the diamond shape that I used in one of the pictures where it was taken in portrait was very effective. I'm also starting to think about how I arrange the cropped shapes on the image. |

First final piece.
I made a physical representation of one of the edits I made in photoshop. First I printed out an A4 size of the black and white image I took. I then chose a fragment of the image to duplicate. I chose the shape of a triangle and put them on card, overlapped them and put them on top of the original image. By putting them on card it added a 3D affect to the image and allows them to stand out more. I edited both the original and fragmented images In photoshop before printing them out. I increased the contrast of the black and white and added more shadow and lightened the image.
Summer Photos.
Here are some of the photos I took over the summer and are planning to experiment with fragmentation using these photos, but using a different style,to go towards another final piece. I took these photos when I went to Italy and Croatia.
Another final piece.
|
For this final Piece I wanted to make it quite small and simple. I used a picture I took from my holiday in Italy of these amazing buildings. I new i wanted to do something with this image, but i didn't just wanted to edit it on photoshop like my last piece. So I decided so build on this idea of buildings and made something more 3D by cutting out sheps of buildings on a plain piece of card and placing in on top of the image. At first I wanted to just have the outlines of buildings, but when cutting the shape out wrong i left a corner of the shape attached to the card. However I liked this effect as the cut out buildings would stand up, and at a certain angle you wouldnt be able to see the images but only the cut out buildings.
|
->
This was the initial image that I wanted to use, and somehow fragment. The image bellow is the card that I had cut out all the separate buildings on, shown at the angle where the buildings stand up. The second images bellow shows the birds eye view of the cut out buildings. I cut out a large section of the card at the top because I wanted to still be able to clearly see some of the image. And the last three images show the different angles of the piece put together. |
Lorenzo Vitturi: Dalton's Anatomy
Lorenzo Vitturi is a photographer as well as a sculpture from Venice, Rome. The inspiration for his work is Dalston's Ridleys road market, where he uses objects from this market to create vibrant sculptures that resemble the human anatomy. He then photographs his finished sculptures and photographs them again with a second image that links to his sculpture whether it be through shape, colour or theme and displays them together as layers of photography. He likes to capture things before they become fragmented or distorted. He says after growing up in Venice, a city that is constantly decaying, that this caused him to focus his work on things before they fall apart.

Fragments In Time:
Here are another set of photos that I took, focussing more on fragments in time instead of fragmenting a picture. For my first set I took them of the church in black heath over about a week. I liked the silhouette of the steeple against the colourful sky. I edited these photos using the filter chrome on the iphone to make the colours stand out and bring out the contrast of the black silhouette against the sky.
With these two sets of images I wanted to experiment with the style of the first artist I researched and made some photos in the same style, Reynald Drouhin. First I did this set, I like how they look together, if i where to display them I was place them in this order and in a line close together because its interesting to compare the different colours of the sky.
I took these photos at the Greenwich boat festival, I liked the silhouette of the crowd against the colourful fireworks in the sky. I was trying to show the different stages of the firework show from the small fireworks at the beginning, the bigger and more colourful ones at the end and then the smoke that followed when it had finished.

Final Evaluation.
My chosen theme was fragments. This topic stood out for me because I think theres a very wide variety of subjects to be able to experiment with, within this theme and, to me is a topic I'm most interested in out of our other options. The idea of rearranging and image and then being able to experiment with it I think will be really interesting, and being able to fragment not only an image but time through a sequence of images.
I started my research looking at a photographer called Reynald Drouhin as I really liked his style and the way he interpreted fragmentation into his work. I then stared making some images influenced by his work, using photoshop and adding my own ideas. I was interested in the idea of nature and plants being fragmented as I thought the the small details and different patterns will be great to experiment with instead of using landscapes like Reynald Drouhin. I liked using different bold shapes and then duplicating the fragmented part of the image and made a few pieces in this style. After experimenting a lot with this kind of style, I found my favourite one which was then my first final piece.
I then wanted to make more final pieces, but ones that would be not simply fragmenting an image in photoshop, I wanted to look at it from a different angle and so I decided to do something to do with fragments of time. This is when I took photos of the same church in blackheath but over about a week, showing the different colours of the sky over time. I then made a few final pieces in this style.
